How to deal with aging skin

An aging skin of a woman

Aging Skin a silent phenomenon:

aging skin is a natural phenomenon of any person’s life. Once the life cycle of skin slows down, the skin begins to age. Lines, wrinkles, discoloration etc appear on one’s face predominantly. The process of aging skin is inevitable. It is because, after a certain period of time, the human skin becomes inefficient in producing collagen. Collagen is the chemical fiber which is responsible for the regenerative property of the skin. If the amount of collagen is more in the skin, the skin looks more fresh and tightly knitted. With old age, the collagen production becomes slow. Hence, the skin ages. However, in recent times, there has been an observation called “extrinsic aging”. The observation states that, due to environmental factors and daily life habits, skin may start to age prematurely. In such a case, a person has to make necessary changes to their lifestyle.

We cannot stop the aging of skin. It is a natural process. However, with the right practices we can easily prevent extrinsic aging or premature skin aging. In this blog, you will know of some easy steps to delay premature skin aging. Here’s our preventive steps on how to deal with aging skin:

  1. Stop smoking: Smoking is undoubtedly a harmful practice. Smoking causes lung cancer and other terminal illnesses. Another harmful effect of smoking is that it contributes to damaging the regenerative ability of the skin. Yes, it causes wrinkled skin, discoloration and stained teeth. Smoking induces the vasoconstriction effect in the skin. This means, smoking inhibits proper blood circulation in the blood vessels. Hence, smoking makes the skin more weak and damaged.
  2. Use sunscreen and proper exfoliation: The exposure to UV rays of the sun is harmful for the skin. The UV rays have been known to cause skin cancer.Furthermore, it aids in the discoloration of skin, causes dry skin, dark spots and ages the skin faster. So, it is advised to be diligent about using sunscreen to prevent premature skin aging. After the use of sunscreen, you should wash it off. In this case, exfoliation helps the skin get rid of any impurities. Also, you should practice washing your face before sleeping. This gives your skin a better chance at regenerating when you’re asleep.
  3. Watch what you eat: What you consume on a day to day basis has an effect on your skin.It is in fact true that a person with an unbalanced diet is likely to have aged skin. What we consume has a lot of effect on our internal biochemical reactions.  To start off, one must scale back on too much consumption of fats, carbohydrates and sugar. This is because such food items will not not adversely affect your body but will make your skin look bloated and retain less moisture. Food items one should aim to consume as much as possible are Vitamin B-12 from fish, poultry eggs and breakfast cereals, Vitamin-C from  citrus fruit, such as oranges and orange juice. You should aim to consume as much Protein as you can. A good source of protein is meat and eggs.
  4. Water is essential: We cannot emphasize enough on how important water consumption is for our skin. Water helps the skin pores to be moisturized. This reduces the chances of your skin getting dry. Water also accelerates metabolism which means more oxygen is supplied to the blood vessels of your skin. One should have 13-16 cups of water everyday.
  5. Sleep and exercise: Sleeping and Exercise are intertwined. When you sleep, your skin gets the time to regenerate all of the dead cells it lost in that day. In fact, one should avoid sleeping on the sides. Sleeping on the sides causes lines to become permanent on the cheeks. Moreover, exercise helps in the body’s metabolism and blood circulation. Consistent sleep and exercise will keep the skin properly supplied with oxygenated blood.

Anyhow, for extensive cases of aging skin one should definitely seek the counsel of an expert dermatologist.
