What is a Punch Biopsy?
A biopsy needle is a medical test that can identify the cause of an abnormal mass or tissue in the body. Using imaging guidance, the doctor inserts a small needle into an abnormal area to remove a sample of tissue to be examined under the microscope by a pathologist, who will determine if the abnormal tissue is cancer, benign tumor, infection, or scar.
Why might a needle biopsy be necessary?
Because the different examinations such as mammography, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, etc., although they can reveal an abnormal mass or tissue, they cannot make a histological diagnosis. That is why the biopsy puncture can determine the exact cause and give the doctor the necessary information to carry out the appropriate treatment.
What is a Punch Biopsy? It hurt?
First, the doctor will determine the best site to puncture with the help of some imaging method (X-ray, CT, ultrasound or mammogram). The area where the needle will be placed is then disinfected and a local anesthetic will be performed on the skin and deeper tissues. Occasionally a venous line may taken to infuse fluids and medications if necessary.
The doctor will guided by some imaging method to reach the injury. Once in it, a small amount of tissue or some cells will be removed from the abnormal area.
This procedure does not hurt, being able to feel only a slight pressure in certain moments of the intervention.
The tissue sample obtained is sent to a doctor specialized in pathological anatomy, who will examine it under a microscope. Results will usually be available within a week.
How do I prepare for a Punch Biopsy?
It usually does not require special preparation. In most cases, it performed on an outpatient basis, that, the patient presents to the radiology service at the time of the appointment and returns home after the procedure. Depending on the location of the injury and the organ to punctured, you will asked for an additional blood test.
If you hospitalized, the medical team will give you instructions on how to prepare for the exam.
What happens after the biopsy needle? I can go home?
You will be asked to stay in the hospital for 1 to 4 hours, so the medical team makes sure everything is okay. Once at home, keep your activity to a minimum for the rest of the day. The puncture site may be uncomfortable for a day or two.
What are the benefits of having a biopsy needle?
Before biopsy punctures were possible, surgical biopsy was the only way to remove tissue for analysis. Biopsy punctures can answer questions about your health without having to resort to surgery.
What are the risks?
They really few since very small needles used . Complications are less than 1% including bleeding and infections.
In a very low percentage, the biopsy puncture does not provide enough information to the pathologist to determine the cause of the abnormality, so they will be asked to return to repeat it.
As each person is different, there may be risks associated with a biopsy needle that are not mentioned here. All questions about these risks should discussed in detail with a member of the medical team performing the procedure.
